Small Group Service
She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
Proverbs 31:20
On Saturday, our small group met up and assembled 50 bagged lunches to take downtown and hand out to the homeless. Lunches consisted of turkey and cheese sandwiches, pretzels, candy, a bottle of water and a scripture card. Our destination was Moore Square & the bus station area. Upon arriving, we quickly began handing out lunches and water to anyone we encountered and before 10 minutes went by, everything was gone. We could have made 100 and still run short.
What great need in such a small place.
What great need in such a small place.
The neat thing was that we were not the only ones down there to hand out meals. There were a couple other groups doing the same thing, and although we didn't know each other, there was an instant connection knowing that we had the same goal:
to reach out through the love of Jesus.
to reach out through the love of Jesus.
We planned this service outing without the intention of preaching Journey or shoving Jesus in their faces. We simply wanted to reach out and show love through a small action of providing a meal for those in the most need. And for some, it may have been their only meal for that day or two or even more. What caught me most by surprise was how many people came up to us and asked for the lunches and water. They didn't wait for us to walk around and hand them out.
There is no fancy ending or bow to be tied onto this story. It was simply our group trying to be the hands and feet of Jesus. There was no preaching. No people accepting Jesus. No conversations exchanged. But perhaps a little seed was planted. Perhaps someone felt a little twinge of hope. Perhaps someone saw Jesus in our actions and had a better day because of it. We don't know and we may never find out. But what we do know is that we will do this again, and again, and again as Jesus has commanded us to take care of the poor and needy.
