Life Temporarily Interrupted
Well, as you can see, there has been a dry streak on this blog for some time now. But, I can explain. Really, I can.
On December 5th as Matt and I were on our way out to a Christmas party, we received a phone call that the ceiling in the unit below us was leaking. Leaking? You've got to be kidding me. So, we turned around and went home to find that not only was his ceiling leaking, but our ceiling was leaking too. Well, leaking might be a bit of an understatement. Rather, the water was streaming from the unit above ours, through our ceiling fan in our bedroom. Oh my. Water everywhere. Across the ceiling from wall to wall, the bed, the floor, the door frame. The walls, inside and out. Drip. Drip. Drip. This cannot be happening again. Remember this?
In the midst of my lost emotions, it was a relief to know that it wasn't something in our condo that caused the problem. But at the same time, my heart still sank because I knew exactly what had to have happened. The water heater busted. And the owner wasn't home.
To make a really long story short enough for anyone to want to read, a phone call was put into the property manager (who was no help at all), a plumber finally showed up and was able to turn the water off from outside the building and we never made it out to the Christmas party.
Having been through water damage before, we spent the afternoon moving things out of the bedroom to make room for all the drying equipment that would have to come in. We had to move quickly because we couldn't turn on the electricity in the bedroom and the sun was setting fast. Once we were finished, we packed up and headed to my parent's house, where we've spent the last two weeks. And the condo is still drying out. That means repairs haven't started yet and there is a very high chance that we won't be able to move back into our place until after Christmas now. Sigh.
I hope that the restoration company will enjoy our Christmas decorations and our tree, because we certainly have missed them.
So, that explains the absence in blog posts. Life has been temporarily interrupted and it's taken me a little while to get back to feeling somewhat "normal" and not so overwhelmed with the situation. So, hold tight, posting will return to normal soon...and hopefully we'll be back into our home by the New Year :)
Sidenote: If you happen to live in a community of multi-unit dwellings, make sure of a couple of things:
1. If your property manager doesn't do anything helpful or useful, figure out a way to get rid of him or her.
2. If you are responsible for your water heater, check the date on it! Make sure it gets replaced before it bursts and wrecks the property of other people. That was a lesson I learned two years ago!
And this one is a freebie for everyone:
If you have an insurance agent that doesn't offer any help and gives you the phone numbers of people that he should be calling on your behalf, fire him! Can we get a little customer service here?
